Phu Yen (VNA) – Nearly 3,000 fishing vessels in the south central coastal province of Phu Yen have been registered on the national fisheries database system (VNfishbase) as of May 2025, with all vessels outfitted with markings that align with regulatory standards.
Among these, 681 vessels are 15 metres in length or more. Of this number, 677 have been equipped with vessel monitoring systems (VMS), achieving a compliance rate of over 99%. The remainder is currently inactive due to damage or being docked ashore.
According to a report by the provincial People’s Committee, since 2019, there have been no local fishing vessels being detained or penalised for illegal fishing in foreign waters. VMS monitoring of offshore fishing activities has been carried out consistently and effectively.
Since the beginning of 2025, authorities recorded 80 instances of vessels over 15 metres losing VMS connection for more than six hours, and one of loss exceeding 10 days. In each case, relevant agencies promptly intervened, guiding the vessels to report as required. So far this year, 14 vessels have been fined for extended loss of VMS connection, amounting to a total of 350 million VND (13,473 USD).
Data from the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment reveals that over 400 vessels in Phu Yen are considered at high risk of breaching regulations related to illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. In response, authorities have intensified communication efforts, engaging directly with ship owners and captains, while also implementing strict enforcement measures.
During a recent meeting reviewing anti-IUU fishing efforts, Vice Chairwoman of the provincial People’s Committee Ho Thi Nguyen Thao directed coastal departments and localities to assign working groups the task of “going to each house, meeting each boat owner” to provide guidance and ensure full compliance with VMS installation regulations./.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien asked the south central province of Phu Yen to take stronger actions in combating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, while making a field trip to the Dong Tac fishing port in Tuy Hoa city on February 26.
