Hanoi (VNA) – A Vietjet Air flight landed safely at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City on May 7 despite heavy rain and strong crosswinds, the airline confirmed following reports of a suspected runway edge excursion.

According to the airport operations control Centre, Flight VJ1149 from Hanoi to HCM City landed on runway 25R at 17:31. While the aircraft proceeded to parking stand 93, Vietjet maintenance staff observed torn marks and grass stuck to the right main landing gear tires, suggesting the plane may have veered slightly off the paved surface during landing.

Subsequent inspections revealed a broken edge light R2.20 and grass scattered along the northern edge of the runway between concrete slabs 240-200.

As a precaution, the airport authority temporarily suspended operations on runway 25R at 19:10 for cleaning and safety checks. The runway resumed normal operation at 19:45.

No irregularities were reported by the flight crew at the time of landing, and all passengers disembarked safely. Vietjet noted that the crew handled the situation professionally, following standard procedures in challenging weather conditions.

The airline promptly notified the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV), which has launched an investigation. The CAAV has initially classified the event as a Category C incident defined as one involving significant infrastructure damage or posing a high safety risk to airport operations.

Vietjet is coordinating with authorities to determine the cause and ensure continued operational safety./.
