The Government has granted Kien Giang province the authority to approve and adjust investment policies for the airport expansion. Environmental impact assessments, fire safety evaluations, and project design approval will also fall under the province’s jurisdiction.

According to Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment Le Huu Toan, a fire prevention and control plan has been in place since the dry season began, including round-the-clock patrols and rapid-response teams to snuff out fires before they could spread.

Phu Quoc has continued to affirm its tourism appeal as one of the most sought-after destinations in the region. Earlier this year, the prestigious travel magazine DestinAsian announced the list of Asia’s 10 most stunning islands as part of its annual Reader’s Choice Awards, and Phu Quoc stands as Vietnam’s sole representative on the list.

To expedite the project, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung called for the immediate transfer of assets from the Ministry of Construction to local authorities, ensuring that flight operations remain uninterrupted during the valuation and transfer process.

Looking beyond APEC 2027, Kien Giang envisions Phu Quoc as a strategic coastal city with international appeal, targeting development milestones through 2030, 2050, and even further.

Phu Quoc Airport will be expanded to accommodate up to 18 million passengers per year by 2027, 4.5 times its current capacity of 4 million. By 2050, the airport is expected to handle up to 50 million passengers annually.

CAAV Director Uong Viet Dung said that the airport upgrading project is among projects to be fast-tracked to serve the organisation of the APEC Economic Leaders' Week 2027 in Vietnam, as well as to support sustainable development of the locality and the country.

Since the beginning of this year, Kien Giang province has imposed administrative fines on 15 VMS-related cases, totalling 760 million VND, down 11 cases compared the same period last year. Additionally, 35 cases related to IUU fishing have been handled, with total fines of over 325 million VND

The result is attributed to the strong determination and concerted efforts by the entire political system, along with strong support from organisations, businesses, donors, armed forces, the youth union, and the people.

The 2027 APEC Economic Leaders' Week is believed to be both a great honour and a golden opportunity for Phu Quoc to make a breakthrough in development, helping elevate Kien Giang’s profile and contributing to Vietnam’s international standing.

Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment Le Huu Toan said that competent agencies have been directed to identify fishing vessels operating without registration, technical safety certificates, fishing permits, and vessel monitoring system (VMS). Boats without proper documents are not allowed to set sail.

The annual activity aimed to further strengthen the solidarity, friendship, and mutual understanding between Kien Giang and Cambodian localities and units.

Phu Quoc, the once-isolated island, has blossomed into a renowned tourist destination, positioning its rightful place on the global travel map and stepping boldly into a new era – that of the nation’s rise.

Director of the Kien Giang Investment, Trade, and Tourism Promotion Centre Quang Xuan Lua spotlighted the province’s strengths in tourism, trade, and export-driven industries. She urged the Global Trade and Technology Council of India to faciliate the imports of Kien Giang products, particularly those of its strengths.

Phu Quoc remained the top attraction, drawing more than 2 million visitors, including 474,468 international tourists, marking a 66.5% year-on-year rise.

Singapore’s CNA news agency named Phu Quoc among its 25 must-visit destinations for 2025.

In the Best Islands category, Phu Quoc claimed the 5th spot – one rank higher than its 6th-place position in 2024. This rise reflects the island’s growing reputation and the continuous enhancement of its hospitality offerings, making it an ever more satisfying experience for travelers.

Starting May 30, Vietnam's budget carrier Vietjet Air will operate the new route with four weekly flights. This addition brings the total number of weekly flights between Vietnam and Singapore to 78, catering to an estimated half a million passengers a year.

With active participation from the entire political system and widespread public support, the programme on substandard housing elimination has helped foster social solidarity and enhance rural development efforts.​
