Indonesia's Semeru volcano erupts four times on April 22

The 3,676-metre-high volcano, located on the boundary of Lumajang and Malang districts, is now at the second level of danger.

Hanoi (VNA) - Semeru volcano in Indonesia's East Java province erupted four times on April 22, spewing gray ash up to 800m above its summit, according to the Indonesian Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG).

Yadi Yuliandi, an officer at the Semeru Volcano Observation Post, said that the initial eruption occurred at 5:55 am (local time), with an ash column reaching 800m, followed by a second eruption at 6:30 am, with a 700-metre ash column for 120 seconds.

The third explosion at 8:41 am lasted 113 seconds, while the fourth, at 12:08 pm, lasted 135 seconds and ejected ash up to 800m high.

The 3,676-metre-high volcano, located on the boundary of Lumajang and Malang districts, is now at the second level of danger. The PVMBG has advised residents to avoid all activities within a 3-kilometre radius of the volcano's summit, as well as avoid river courses that originate from Semeru's peak./.

Thailand slashes growth forecast amidst US tariffs

The Thai economy grew by 3.1% in Quarter 1, slightly down from 3.3% in Quarter 4 last year. Against the backdrop, the National Economic and Social Development Council reduced its annual growth projection to between 1.3-2.3%, down from the previous forecast of 2.3-3.3%.
