Exhibition opens on Dien Bien Phu victory

An exhibition entitled “Dien Bien Phu – A golden page in Vietnam’s history” opened in the city of Dien Bien Phu in the northern province of Dien Bien on April 19, drawing the participation of domestic and foreign visitors.

DienBien (VNA) – An exhibition entitled “Dien Bien Phu – A golden page inVietnam’s history” opened in the city of Dien Bien Phu in the northern provinceof Dien Bien on April 19, drawing the participation of domestic and foreignvisitors.

The displaymarks the 65th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory which ended French colonialrule in Vietnam (1954-2019). The exhibition is comprised of three sections, featuringpreparations for the Dien Bien Phu Campaign, the 56 days of the campaign, andthe 1954 Geneva Conference.

Nearly150 documents, maps, and other items are on display, which have been kept inVietnam’s archives and cultural agencies, as well as the French Ministry of theArmed Forces. Many of the documentswere only decoded as recently as 2016 and are being made public in Vietnam forthe first time, said Vu Nam Hai, Director of the Dien Bien Phu Victory Museum.

The exhibitsserve as valuable artefacts of the historic event and are hoped to raisepatriotism and national unity amongst the youth.

The eventwill run until May 10 at the Dien Bien Phu Victory Museum.

The Dien Bien PhuCampaign lasted from March to May 1954 under the command of General Vo NguyenGiap. Vietnam’s victory on May 7, 1954 led to the signing of the 1954 GenevaAccords in which France agreed to withdraw its forces from its colonies inIndochina. –VNA
