Quang Ngai (VNA) - A conference was held in the central province of Quang Ngai on April 25 to raise awareness of sea and island sovereignty and illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing prevention among local fishermen.

At the event, the Command of Coast Guard Region 2 briefed the fishermen on the Law of the Sea of Vietnam, the Fisheries Law, and legal documents related to IUU prevention. Officers also provided guidance on identifying areas under Vietnam’s sovereignty and jurisdiction, traditional fishing grounds, warning zones, and prohibited fishing areas.

Authorities further emphasised key regulations on offshore fishing, including penalties for violations, and requirements for vessel monitoring systems and catch reporting as per legal standards.

The event helped enhance fishermen’s legal awareness, encouraging them to comply with national regulations and European Commission (EC) recommendations, in a joint effort to have the EC's "yellow card" on Vietnam’s seafood lifted. It also aimed to boost morale and build trust, offering a source of strength for fishermen to confidently pursue sustainable offshore fishing.

As part of the programme, organisers presented 48 gift packages, each worth 1 million VND (38.4 USD), to policy beneficiary and disadvantaged fishing households in An Phu commune, along with free medical check-ups and medicine to 100 local residents./.
